Earwax Removal

Every removal happens under direct visualization, meaning your audiologist watches the canal through a magnified otoscope the entire time rather than working blind. The method follows the wax in front of us: fine instrument extraction for firm or shallow buildup, and low-pressure irrigation when softening and flushing is the gentler route for that ear.

Most appointments run 15 to 30 minutes and finish with a quick look at the eardrum to confirm everything is clear and healthy. Cotton swabs push most of the wax deeper into the canal, where it packs against the eardrum and becomes harder to reach. They also scratch the thin skin lining the canal and, inserted too far, can injure the eardrum itself. Over-the-counter drops soften wax reasonably well, but softening is not removal once a blockage has formed.

Ear candling is ineffective and genuinely risky. Studies show it removes no wax, and reported injuries include burns, canal obstruction from melted candle wax, and perforated eardrums. It varies widely. Most adult ears clear themselves and never need help at all. Others produce heavier wax or have narrow or sharply curved canals that trap it, and those patients do well with periodic visits, anywhere from twice a year to once every few years depending on how quickly buildup returns.

Hearing aid wearers, daily earbud users, and anyone with recurring itching or blockages usually need more frequent attention, because anything worn in the canal slows the ear's natural clearing.
