The FDA limits the category to adults 18 and older with self-perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. That phrase carries a lot of weight. The rules are built around what you believe your hearing is, not what an audiogram shows, and plenty of people who describe their loss as mild turn out to have a moderate to severe or uneven loss once it is measured.
OTC devices are not appropriate for children, for hearing that dropped suddenly or keeps changing, for loss in one ear only, for severe or profound loss, or for anyone with drainage, pain, or a history of ear surgery. The law no longer requires one for an OTC purchase, but the reasoning for having one has not changed. A diagnostic evaluation shows where your hearing sits at every pitch, in each ear separately, and how well you follow speech when there is noise in the room. That last measure is often what explains the frustration people bring in.
Testing also catches problems amplification cannot solve: a canal packed with wax, a perforated eardrum, fluid behind the drum, or a sudden drop in one ear that needs medical attention quickly. Often, yes, and we are not going to lecture you about it. Bring the devices in. If they are programmable and still supported by the manufacturer, we can test your hearing, adjust the settings to match your audiogram, and verify the result in your ear. Some OTC models are locked to their app and cannot be adjusted by a clinician, and we will tell you that plainly.
Our on-site lab also cleans and services most brands regardless of where they were purchased. If the devices genuinely cannot deliver what your hearing requires, you will hear that too, along with what the alternatives cost.
